What kind of patients do you treat?
I evaluate and treat adults for psychotherapy and/or medication management. I enjoy working with patients who struggle with depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and ADHD. Furthermore, I treat patients with issues of low self-esteem, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, poor job and academic performance, and loss and grieving.
What is your treatment philosophy? What kind of therapy do you practice?
First, you will be treated, at all times, with concern, dignity and respect. This begins from the very first time you call to schedule your initial evaluation. I pride myself and my practice on a warm and empathic approach. Having a good therapeutic relationship also will involve challenging you to face difficult "truths" about yourself, your life, and your current situation. If you are not challenged to explore and question your assumptions of the world (and yourself), then you will not likely be able to grow and change.
My therapeutic methods are best described as eclectic, making use of both my psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) training, and other therapeutic skills.
What will happen when I call Dr. Mills for the first time?
First, you will be warmly greeted and congratulated for having the strength and initiative to seek treatment! I will then spend a few minutes discussing your reasons for seeking treatment over the phone. If we agree to proceed, you will be scheduled for a comprehensive initial evaluation, to be completed as soon as possible.
After the initial consultation, during which we will explore the major problems you are facing, we will then discuss your interests and motivation for either psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of the two modalities.
